Natural Resources Wales has just launched a web based mapping application to help inform the sustainable management of the Welsh marine environment. The FishMap Môn Guidance Tool was developed by Astun and designed to be open to the public, fisherman and policy makers. The area chosen for this EU funded project was Anglesey or Môn in Welsh hence the name.
The bi-lingual (Welsh or English) application has a clean and simple interface with familiar pan and zoom tools for map navigation and the ability to select different base mapping and multiple data layers - habitats, protected sites, restricted zones and other reference data.
The application is built with open source components – PostgreSQL with the PostGIS extension as the database and MapServer using styled layer descriptors (SLDs) for visualisation. All the calculations used to create the fishing scenarios use SQL functions in PostgreSQL. MapProxy is used for tile rendering. The data and the application are hosted using Astun Cloud Services on Amazon servers.
